Udder Space

Adobe XD Prototype Link

Adobe Creative Jam (official brief here)

In the month of May, 2021, I had an amazing experience participating in this creative jam, which is sort of like a hackathon for UX/UI designers. In a span of 1 week, my teammate and I completed an Adobe XD prototype and was chosen to be a top 10 finalist!

Competition Objective: Your challenge is to help kids learn more about space exploration by teaching about a single or multiple NASA JPL missions. Design a third-party (not NASA JPL branded) Android tablet or Apple iPad app that provides an engaging way for kids to learn and share space stories, facts, and topics.

Our Project: Udder Space (Prototype Link)

Presentation Video (3min) for Top 10 Finalists

Abstract

“Udder Space” is a tablet app that encourages students to learn more about NASA JPL space missions. Looking at the problem space, the wonders of space exploration and the abundance of resources provided by JPL is already something kids can easily be excited about–we just needed a vehicle to connect the two.

We decided to enhance learning via gamification techniques, by utilizing a progression system inspired by mobile games like Candy Crush, micro-interaction challenges like Nintendo's Wario Ware, and interactive reading inspired by various educational apps. Unlike the typical reading and quiz apps on the market, “Udder Space” deploys space-themed animations and micro-interactions to further delight and captivate our target users.

In order to keep the user interface intuitive, we designed a mascot for our app, a bovine astronaut named "Milky." Milky often shows up to guide kids along the game journey and encourages them along the learning process!

The Design Process

With only one week to complete and submit this project, my teammate and I conducted a design sprint of our own which consisted of:
